Description
Yerba mate gourd “Pedro”
What we know as “mate gourd”, “calabash” or calabaza is actually what the name itself says. Gourd/squash
Mate cup is made from the fruit of a climbing plant that belongs to the squash family. This plant likes warm and humid climates. Although today it grows all over the world.
There are many types of calabashes, of various shapes, sizes, and nowadays also materials.
The fruit of this plant was used for hundreds of years by the Guarani. They lived in the area of present-day Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay and used the fruit as a drinking vessel. The hard, woody skin of the fruit was quite strong, light, and held water well. To this day, they use such mate vessels in those regions.
The most common “matte gourds” today are made of ceramic. Basically, they are popular because of their ease of use and cleaning. As well as with people who are prone to allergic reactions and feel safer drinking mate from a ceramic calabash, rather than from a real gourd.
Ceramic calabazas, such as our yerba mate gourd Pedro, are made in the image of a traditional maté gourd. Despite their diferences in material, the way to prepare yerba mate in the ceramic mate gourd is the same as in a traditional gourd.
Besides the ceramic one, you can also find a more traditional version of the maté gourd. As well as yerba mate and bombilla. Everything you need to enjoy this unusual drink.
