Description
Bancha tea
-Bancha-
This is a green tea with low caffeine content and high calcium content. It has a mild taste with grassy and fresh notes.
How is Bancha made?
In order to make it, leaves are picked from the lower part of the stem, i.e. older leaves (as appose to Sencha, which is obtained from harvesting the first leaves). Bancha leaves are processed the same way as Sencha and most other Japanese green teas. Leaves are steamed, rolled and dried.
The name consists of:
- Ban – which means “late tea” – harvested later (it is a second, third and sometimes even fourth harvest, depending on the producer). Ban can also mean “daily tea”, which implies that tea can be drunk every day, throughout the day.
- Cha – meaning tea
The low caffeine content makes this tea perfect for drinking throughout the day, and can even be drunk in the evening (except for people who react to even the smallest amounts of caffeine).
In addition to its mild taste, it is also gentle on the stomach, compared to some other green teas. It helps with digestion in some people.
