Description
Moroccan green tea
Extremely refreshing mixture of green tea (Gunpowder– 94%) and Moroccan mint leaves.
Gunpowder green tea is a Chinese green tea that got its name from its shape. Each leaf is individually twisted and rolled into a small ball, similar to grains of gunpowder.
In the past, the tea was made by hand. And today they produce almost all types of gunpowder with the help of machines.
The Chinese word for this tea is zhu cha – or pearl tea. But in Western countries it caries the name gunpowder. There are stories that put the beginnings of this tea at the time of the rule of Tang Dynasty. More than 1,000 years ago. This can make it one of the oldest teas (the oldest type of green tea) in the world. And one of the first greens they exported from China.
As with other teas, heat is used to process the leaves. They roast the tea, “fix it”, in large pans/pots (which stops the oxidation process). Therefore, this contributes to the slightly smoky flavor that comes through the greener notes of gunpowder tea. Due to that, people sometimes describe this tea slightly nutty.
Larger and looser balls are considered a sign of lower quality tea, while high quality gunpowder will have smaller, tightly rolled balls.
Mint complements the flavor of this mixture, and makes it smell fresh. So, this fusion of the sharp freshness of mint and the strength and fullness of gunpowder flavor is one of the most perfect combinations for hot sunny days.
